Just keep in mind the terms from the last section because they will help you as we go forward. Whenever you open MS Publisher , you'll see the screen pictured below.
The only way you will not see this screen is if you open an existing MS Publisher file that is located on your computer. Again, the screen pictured below is when you open the Publisher program and not an actual file. Now, let's dissect the screen to teach you how to create a new Publisher file.
Shown above is the section where you can create a blank MS Publisher file. Your first two choices are standard 8. One is portrait and the other is landscape. You can click More Blank Page Sizes to select a different size, or you can select My Templates to choose from a template that you've created and saved, such as for a monthly newsletter. Just click on one of these choices to open.
Let's say, however, that you don't have time to search through all these templates, and you want to choose one quickly. Go back to the top of the page to the search box shown below. You'll then see this as MS Publisher searches for a template. When it's finished, it will show you the results, as shown below. To copy an object, follow the same steps for Cut, but select Copy. To paste an object, move the cursor to where you want to position the object, right click and select Paste. Pasting text gets a little more detailed because you have more options for pasting in Publisher You have three options.
Note: To cut, copy, and paste, you can also click on the Home tab and go to the Clipboard group. Whenever you cut or copy anything in MS Publisher, it is automatically sent to the Clipboard.
The Clipboard does just as its name implies. It holds what you copy and paste for you to use. The Clipboard and its associated tools can be found on the Home tab at the far left end of the ribbon. The clipboard will open as a long window to the left of your work space. It can only hold 24 objects. When a 25th object is added, the first copied item is removed. Labels can be a real pain to design and print, but Publisher does this very well. At work, we have two copies of Publisher on different computers. Both computers have exactly the same fonts installed on them. Normally, this is great, but occasionally, if I work on a document on Computer A, then open it later on Computer B, some things, especially text that is a tight fit, the last line of a document is suddenly no longer visible, as the fitting is now off and I have dropped the last line off the page.
This can be a real pain to deal with. Another problem with Publisher is that there is no Mac version. Since most serious DTP work is done on Mac, this makes moving DTP files from say a company started version to professional versions on a Mac impossible. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the DTP field. You have programs designed for greeting cards, signs and the like. You really get the impression that MIcrosoft really does not care about Publisher.
I believe it was created by a separate company that Microsoft bought decades ago, and they have largely ignored it since then. This is a shame, as a little work would create a nice middle-of-the-road program capable of handling complex documents reliably. So, if you proposed document fall into the middle of the road category, docs of no more than 10 pages, then Publisher is a decent program.
If you create document that are larger than this, or need things like Table of Contents or indexes, seriously consider InDesign. I read some of the reviews before buying my copy of Pub and almost didn't. I needn't have worried.
Unlike many of the more-negative reviewers, I wasn't planning anything extensive: I was just seeking a good replacement for my old favorite business card software by Cosmi - which was obsoleted by printer and operating-system upgrades. The only big difference in Publisher is that it isn't interview-oriented the old Cosmi product would guide the user, item by item - company name, employee name, employee title, etc.
The interview ensured that the user didn't forget anything a business card normally includes. Its editor allowed the user to treat each item separately, with different fonts, sizes, and ink colors. Publisher makes such distinction between text fields fairly easy, although there ARE some traps: "AutoFit", the default for some reason, results in doublespacing - hardly appropriate in such a limited print area, I think, but what do I know?
The long and short of it is that all other non-specific software I tried worked for me only if I didn't mind creating a card in four or five overlay files, which I then had to print in four or five print operations. Running a single sheet of Avery through the printer multiple times never made me feel secure. With Publisher, though, I can design and print a card in two files - if I want to create a two-sided card.
In all other respects, I find Publisher an excellent tool for the job, which, in my environment, is NOT a one-time exercise. Changing the card design, once or twice a year, can help maintain customer interest. I have always had a Publisher program ever since I learned to use a computer in It is pricey no matter where it is sold.
But, over the long run, it is so worth that price. There are so many things you can do with it. I personally make my own greeting cards. It is packed with so many features that I haven't even learned everything yet. The only disappointment is because Microsoft will not let you use this on more than one laptop.. If I need to buy another laptop, I really don't want to have to buy Publisher again. But I will have already used my "one laptop" option.
Don't see why Microsoft has to be so stingy. But they do make fantastic programs! Great buy! I was so pleased with this purchase! I purchased this to use for business purposes, and was happy to be able to purchase it through Amazon.
I am not a "tech" person, so I was happy that the process for downloading this software was easy. It does take a bit of time to download, but that's because the program is robust. I still use the program on a regular basis, and have had no problems with it. The types of items that I have used it for include brochure development; fliers; calendars; one-page overview documents; and more! I have been able to develop really attractive and professional items using this program, and I would say that this is a "must have" for businesses of all sizes and types.

It is easy to use and if you know MS word then you will soon get to grips with it. My only minor complaint would be that there are all sorts of things that appear on the screen which I assume are advisories to let me know I have made an error but for the life of me I have no idea what they mean. For example there is a thing that looks like a steaming mug of coffee.
Absolutely no idea what that means. You can hover the mouse over it but it still won't reveal its purpose. Perhaps I should have a tea break? Sometimes you get a really thick bold line at the top of the page, again no idea what it means. I just ignore all of these warnings and the magazine which I have now produced 27 issues of comes out fine every time.
Like the other reviewers I do like the ability to shrink down publication size when you're making documents to send to a commercial printer as I do. Report abuse. But recently my computer laptop went down, it has got fixed but I cannot reinstall my pound product as it says the product key is not valid anymore!

The improvement is dramatic and I'm delighted with the new software. The version uses the ribbon-based tool system now well established in Word, Excel and Power Point since and with which I was therefore familiar, and it works superbly for Publisher.
Another delight is the extremely powerful and flexible facility to convert the files to pdf or xps. My version installed from the DVD without problems and has given none since. A very satisfied customer! I bought this package for my new computer because I had already been using a previous version and was very happy with it. There are a lot of changes in the new version which I am still getting used to, but overall it is as good as the old one. One useful feature which seems to be missing is the ability to size text automatically to the size of the box, but I am happy to forgo this in return for so much else the package offers.
My current computer did not come with Publisher as standard and I was lost without it as I find WordArt just doesn't do it for me. I am able to do such things as make up my own cards using Publisher and sending them out electronically to friends - so saving on postage too. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
